Helen O'Connell (1941) Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing In A Hurry w/ The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra
Funny, witty and extremely swinging. This song, along with Tangerine and I Remember You, was written by Johnny Mercer and Victor Schertzinger for the movie the Fleet's In. Jimmy's band, coming off the heels of several million selling records, was offered the highest price yet paid to a band to secure their appearance in a Hollywood movie. Exceeding Glenn Miller's record. Helen's version is unequaled in its humor, subtlety and sheer showstopping quality. No other band singer of the era could have pulled this off.

I See Your Face Before Me - Helen O'Connell
Просмотров 8 тыс.8 лет назад
Helen O'Connell's 'I See You Face before Me' is one of the top renditions of this Arthur Schwartz and Howard Dietz American Songbook classic. The same composer's gave us the memorable 'Dancing in The Dark'(Artie Shaw). This recording was done with a nine piece 'cool jazz' orchestra which in fact included some members of Artie Shaw's classic Gramercy Five.

Helen sings with a 40s era piano, bass, and guitar trio. Her style of singing was perfect for an intimate small group and helped inspire some of the great piano trios of the 40s, such as the one led by Charles Brown.

They would turn the room on its head with this number. The lyrics, the rhythm and above all Helen's singing make for a quite infectious record. It was a huge hit in 1940.

An elegant dance band side, and one of the earlier versions of the Lil Hardin classic later made famous by Ray Charles. This rare recording from 1940, has exceptionally good sound. It's even rarer because it's the only version that contains some added lyrics from the songwriting team of Gene De Paul and Don Raye of "Star Eyes", "I Remember April" fame.

This band had an amazing range. From the romantic, to the funny, to the absolutely infectious swing of tunes like this one.

This has long been my favorite, the whole band is in a pure jazz mode on this one. From Jimmy's long 20s-style clarinet solo to Bobby Byrne's trombone obbligato, to a nice tenor solo towards the end. Helen blends her voice beautifully on this her best early jazz recording.

The very best of 1941 with The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. A smooth, romantic follow up to Green Eyes.

An early and impressive jazz side from Helen that includes one of Jimmy's best solos and a nice trombone obbligato by Bobby Byrne. This version from 1939 was the second highest charting of all time.

When the sun comes out And that rain stops beatin' on my windowpane When the sun comes out There'll be bluebirds 'round my door Singin' like they did before That old storm broke out And my man walked off and left me in the rain Though he's gone, I doubt If he'll stay away for good I'd stop living if he should Love is funny It's not always peaches, cream and honey Just when everything looked bright and sunny Suddenly the cyclone came I'll never be the same Till that sun comes out And that rain stops beatin' on my windowpane If my heart holds out Let it rain and let it pour It may not be long before There's a knockin' at my door Then you'll know the one I love walked in When the sun comes out

I first heard Star Eyes sung by Mary Mayo on the 1963 album Moon Gas by Dick Hyman. What a voice! Warm at the low end, clear and piercing at the top. Her two-octave finish is fabulous. Hyman wanted to make electronic music that was accessible and playable live. Star Eyes has the same problem as the rest of the tunes on the album": It's too short. I wish they would have stretched out on all the tunes and made it a double album.

A bygone era, which sadly, we will never experience again and we will be poorer for it. Jimmy Dorsey Green Eyes and Artie Shaw's Begin the Beguine were my Mum & Dads favourite tunes. I grew up with the big bands and I still gravitate back to escape the 'noise' of modern music.

Cute song! Kind of think that people in 2024 would be mystified by lyrics: " Have you ever been embarrassed when you're in a smart Cafe and they play a Cuban tempo, is your dancing quite passe."
